Ask the Expert: The Right Wax for the Right Parts

Published: Apr 16, 2008

This month, our waxing expert Shala Dveirin is answering question about using the right wax for the right parts. And these questions couldn’t have been more timely – in the upcoming May/June issue of Renew, we’re delving into the differences between hard and soft wax. Make sure to check out the Renew Body section for all the details.

Q. I've experienced problems time and time again doing Brazilian waxes. I've been in the business only a year and have trouble removing the hair in and on the labia. I use Cerepil hard wax when I just can't seem to get it with the soft wax and pellon strips. If you could give me some sage advice I would be more than appreciative.

Thank you,

Cathye

A. Hi Cathye! My first piece of advice is don’t just use hard wax as your back-up; use it to begin with. Don’t use the soft wax. Soft wax is better for large areas of the body like legs and the back. Also, make sure the area you are waxing is nice and taut, especially when you’re using hard wax. When using the hard wax, pay attention to the direction of the hair growth. Go back and forth with the wax in the direction of hair growth and back again the opposite way. This way you make sure you get all of the hair covered and you get the wax to “shrink wrap” around individual hairs.

Q. Help! In 10 years of being an esthetician, I have probably only waxed three pairs of legs. I use Cirepil blue wax and I can get excellent results everywhere, but NOT on legs. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

Sandy

A. Hi Sandy! I’m going on the assumption that you are using hard wax when waxing legs, so my advice would be to try using soft wax with pellon strips instead. Hard wax is not great for large areas like the legs. You’ll see better results and also cut down your service time. You should also make sure hair growth is long enough. If the client has shaved, they need to wait for 7 to 10 days for the hair to grow.
