6 Super All-Over Anti-Agers

Published: Jun 27, 2008
By Kelly Cison

Today’s protocols tighten, tone and rejuvenate almost every area of the body—from hair to hands, lips to décolleté, and even down to every last eyelash.

No doubt your clients have tried the firming facial, the rejuvenating peel, the brightening serums and the hydrating masks. They may have softened a few lines or firmed a sagging jawline, and their faces are looking younger—but now they want the rest of their bodies to match.

With good reason. We know that aging affects every part of us, so why stop at the face? Hair and eyelashes can get thin, lips succumb to fine lines, feet get cracked and rough, while hands and décolletés show off sun damage—and are usually a dead giveaway of one’s true age. Surgery can be too drastic for many spa-goers who are just looking for a little refresher. Fortunately for them, there is no shortage of professional products designed to turn back the clock (or at least slow it down) and keep every body part looking its best. Spas across the country are taking advantage of these tested products and either incorporating manufacturer’s step-by-step treatments or creating them specifically for clients. When you offer a unique service like the ones listed, you fill a void in the marketplace—and exceed your guests’ expectations. To them, you just might be the new fountain of youth.

#1 foot repair

The Spa on King, Oshawa, Ontario

This feet treat is courtesy of Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Hand and Foot Treatment, which can be used on one or both body parts. The key ingredient, retinol, is a popular anti-ager in face products, so your clients will be familiar with the top-notch results it achieves. Spa esthetician Gillian DaSilva says that heading into the summer season, “This is the treatment to get right now if you’re going to be wearing sandals.” Hydration and vitamins calm rough heels and thick cuticles, and antioxidant-packed ingredients even minimize age spots and tighten skin. Finally, a paraffin dip helps soothe and protect. DaSilva sells this treatment in a series and, for an easy add-on, pairs it with a deluxe pedicure.

service summary: Give feet the latest in retinol-based vitamin repair, plus the deep moisturizing benefits of a soothing paraffin wax wrap. Instant hydration and repair for dry, chapped or prematurely aging hands and feet.

1. Complete a FaceMapping card, checking for any contraindications. Do not offer service to clients with abrasions, cuts or nail disorders.

2. Cleanse feet with Conditioning Body Wash and remove with steam towel that has been customized with Replenishing Botanical Mixer.

3. Snip open one bulb of Multivitamin Power Exfoliant. Apply 1/4 of contents to one of the feet, massaging for five minutes.

4. Remove exfoliant, then cleanse foot again using Conditioning Body Wash. Gently blot dry.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 on opposite foot, then massage Body Hydrating Cream into both feet.

6. Dip feet in paraffin wax. Place in plastic liners and cover with heated booties. Leave in place 15-20 minutes.

7. Optional: Repeat steps 1-6 on hands. Service may be extended with hand or foot reflexology.

8. Remove paraffin and apply Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment to feet and hands.

#2 eyelash conditioning

Aesthetica, Dallas, Texas

With age-related hair loss comes sparse, brittle eyelashes. Though lash extensions may be helpful for some, your older clients would likely be thrilled to have their own natural eyelashes back. You can help them promote regrowth on their own with this take-home product, a conditioner that helps make lashes look longer and fuller. (Listed below are the steps they should follow.) A spokesperson for Dr. Warren J. Katz, medical director at Aesthetica, says clients have seen “noticeable improvement” with the RevitaLash product. Some spas even have clients use it on sparse or uneven eyebrows. To promote retail sales, consider packaging RevitaLash with a make-up or brow shaping service.

product summary: Thin, missing eyelashes are not only a nuisance, they are difficult to remedy. This breakthrough in natural lash enhancement is a serum that actually increases lash length and thickness.

1. Start with a clean, dry face.

2. Once a day, at home, apply a thin line of RevitaLash Eyelash Conditioner to the base of your upper eyelashes, as though you were applying eyeliner. Only a small amount is needed.

3. If you are applying other lotions or make-up, wait five minutes after applying RevitaLash to do so.

4. According to Aesthetica, use once a day without fail for several weeks for best results. It’s not necessary to apply more than once a day.

5. Though you may notice new growth within the first few days, full results will be obtained in three to 10 weeks.

#3 hand rejuvenating

Spa-Go Salon and Day Spa, Aiken, South Carolina

For the past few years, LED light systems have been used to treat aging on the face. Now, Revitalight has developed a HandSpa to do the same for this often-overlooked (but very noticeable) body part. “The light helps stimulate collagen growth, even tone and leads to tighter, smoother skin,” says spa manager Giselle Bianco. Sun spots and the appearance of veins are minimized and, she adds, the light may even ease arthritis pain. The best part? No technician is needed to perform the service and results are evident after the first session. Clients can opt for HandSpa before or after a manicure. Or, for optimal results, Spa-Go recommends a series of six weekly treatments for $125.

service summary: Reduce the appearance of fine lines and age spots on hands. See results after a few short sessions. Quick and easy, with no downtime.

1. If the service is post-manicure, ensure clients’ hands are clean and dry.

2. Open top of HandSpa and have client place hands on a paper insert in the machine. Inserts are disposable for sanitary reasons.

3. Lower top of machine and start the LED light. The emitted light will be red, but should not be hot.

4. Each session will last for 10 minutes. When finished, clients can engage in normal activities with no recovery time needed.

5. Clients should wait one to two weeks before next HandSpa appointment as overuse is counterproductive.

#4 lip smoothing

L’Institut Sothys,
New York City

Facial lines are most prominent around the mouth and lips, especially if your client is a smoker or spent a lot of time in the sun. Those wishing to get rid of the “puckered” look need to use extra caution when looking for a product for the delicate lip area. At L’Institut Sothys in New York, ladies who lunch are picking up Secrets de Sothys Intense Lip Care. “Our clients love it because it’s great for fine lines and wrinkles. It helps to firm and smooth the area, and creates a plumping effect,” says spa director Trena Ross. And it hydrates, so skin won’t get irritated or break out. While the flagship spa doesn’t perform a standard lip treatment, they say this product is great for creating a customized treatment for any client; or add on to a hydrating facial, like the Sothys Hydroptimale THI 3 facial (see below).

#5 hair revitalizing

Millennium Medical Spa,
Newport Beach, California

“Do you know hair ages, too?” asks Jan Marini. If you have older clients, you do. Age Intervention Hair Revitalizing Conditioner from Jan Marini Research aims to turn back the clock at the roots with this formula that is being used in salons, hair restoration clinics, and medical spas like Millennium in Newport Beach, California. “We have a lot of people on it,” says Sarah Alberg, medical spa coordinator. “It doesn’t just volumize, it actually helps grow new hair and makes it thicker.” And it’s not just for seniors. Alberg reports that men and women of every age have been taking a bottle home. Create your own in-spa treatment by adding this service to your scalp massages and facials, then let clients maintain the results at home.

#6 neck and decollete firming

SunDay’s Salon Spa, Laconia,
New Hampshire

The decollete is a natural area to treat during a facial, so it makes the perfect add-on or upgrade. At SunDay’s Salon Spa in New Hampshire, plenty of clients are adding on this targeted Pevonia treatment knows as “Esthebuste,” says owner Emily Gagnon. Kigelia Africana is the specific ingredient in the mask that helps heal, repair and tighten dull or loose skin, and results are visible after the first treatment. That’s important, since the sensitive decollete area is often the first body part to reveal signs of aging. For that reason, says Gagnon, “This is an all-ages treatment that is going to protect the skin before it even starts to show damage.”

service summary: This treatment focuses on the decollete (neck and chest). The seaweed mint and rosemary mask is a two-part thermal lifting mask that focuses on intensive firming, hydrating and repair of sun damaged skin to create a smoother, firmer decollete. Complement any facial with this treatment. It’s also great by itself.

1. Have client lay face up on the treatment bed as you would for a facial. Gently cleanse neck and decollete area with Phyto-Gel Cleanser.

2. Remove cleanser with warm towel.

3. Apply a toner for sensitive skin, such as Lavandou Lotion.

4. Then, apply Esthebuste Specific Neck and Bust Concentrate to decollete area.

5. Follow with Esthebuste Masque to firm, brighten and hydrate skin. If client is getting just the decollete service, you may perform a head massage while masque sets. If this service is being performed as part of a facial, apply both the Esthebuste Masque and the facial masque at the same time.

6. Remove masque with warm towel. Perform sweeping effleurage massage on decollete area for about 10 to 15 minutes.

7. Apply appropriate moisturizer for skin type, as well as a sun protection cream.
